What to Expect During Your Window & Door Installation: A Step-by-Step Timeline

If you've never had new windows or doors fitted before, it's completely natural to feel a little uncertain about the process. How long will it take? Will your home be left open overnight? What do you need to do to prepare? These are the questions we hear every week from homeowners across Merseyside, St Helens, Warrington, Wigan, Cheshire and Greater Manchester. In this guide, we'll walk you through every stage of a typical installation so you know exactly what to expect.

Stage 1: The Initial Survey and Quotation

Every quality installation begins with a proper survey. At MW Installations, we visit your home to take precise measurements, discuss your requirements and help you choose the right products for your property. Whether you're considering UPVC windows, a new composite door, bi-fold doors or a full conservatory, this is your chance to ask questions and explore your options.

During the survey, your installer should also assess any potential challenges. Older properties across Merseyside and Cheshire, for example, sometimes have non-standard openings or brickwork that needs attention. Identifying these issues early avoids surprises later. A reputable company will always provide a written quotation with no hidden costs, giving you time to make your decision without pressure.

Stage 2: Ordering and Lead Times

Once you've confirmed your order, your windows and doors are manufactured to your exact specifications. Lead times vary depending on the products chosen:

  • Standard UPVC windows: typically 2 to 4 weeks
  • Composite doors: around 3 to 5 weeks, depending on design and colour
  • Bi-fold and patio doors: usually 4 to 6 weeks due to more complex manufacturing
  • Conservatories: 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the size and style

Your installer should keep you informed throughout this period and confirm your installation date well in advance. At MW Installations, we always aim to give you at least a week's notice so you can prepare your home.

Stage 3: Preparing Your Home

A little preparation on your part goes a long way towards ensuring a smooth installation day. Here's a practical checklist:

  • Clear the area: Move furniture, ornaments and curtains or blinds away from the windows and doors being replaced. Allow at least a metre of clear space around each opening.
  • Protect your flooring: Professional installers will lay dust sheets, but if you have particularly delicate flooring, consider adding extra protection.
  • Secure pets: Keep cats and dogs in a separate room. Open doorways and exposed openings can be stressful for animals.
  • Inform your neighbours: There will be some noise, so a quick word with those next door is always appreciated.
  • Plan for children: Installation areas aren't safe play zones. If possible, arrange for young children to be looked after elsewhere.

Stage 4: Installation Day

This is the part most homeowners are curious (and sometimes anxious) about. Here's how a typical day unfolds.

Morning Arrival

Our fitting team will arrive at the agreed time, usually between 8:00 and 8:30 am. They'll introduce themselves, confirm the plan for the day and lay protective sheeting throughout your home. As a family-run business, we pride ourselves on treating every customer's home with the same care we'd show our own.

Removal of Old Windows or Doors

The existing frames are carefully removed. This is usually the noisiest part of the process, but it's typically over quite quickly. Your installer will manage any debris immediately, keeping your home as tidy as possible.

Fitting the New Products

New frames are positioned, levelled and secured into the opening. Glass units are then installed, followed by handles, locks and any finishing trims. For composite doors, this includes aligning multi-point locking systems and checking the threshold seal. Bi-fold doors require additional time for track alignment and panel adjustment to ensure smooth operation.

Finishing and Sealing

Internal and external seals are applied to ensure weatherproofing and insulation. Any gaps between the frame and brickwork are filled and trimmed neatly. This stage is crucial for energy efficiency and keeping out the North West weather we all know so well.

How Long Does It All Take?

As a rough guide:

  • A single window replacement: 1 to 2 hours
  • A full house of windows (typically 6 to 10 units): 1 to 2 days
  • A composite front door: 2 to 4 hours
  • Bi-fold or patio doors: half a day to a full day
  • A conservatory: 3 to 7 days depending on size and complexity

Your home will never be left unsecured overnight. If a job runs across multiple days, temporary boarding or secure closures are always put in place.

Stage 5: Final Inspection and Handover

Once everything is fitted, your installer should walk you through every new window and door. This handover is your opportunity to check that everything opens and closes smoothly, that locks function correctly and that you're happy with the finish. You'll also receive advice on caring for your new products, including cleaning tips and guidance on adjusting hinges or handles if needed over time.

At MW Installations, we don't consider a job complete until you're completely satisfied. If there's anything that needs adjusting, we address it there and then.

After Installation: What Comes Next

A good installer doesn't disappear once the van pulls away. Look for companies that offer proper aftercare, including guarantees on both the products and the installation workmanship. You should receive all guarantee documentation, along with details of how to get in touch if you ever have a concern.

It's also worth noting that newly sealed frames may take a day or two to fully cure, so avoid painting or decorating around them for at least 48 hours. If you notice any minor settling or stiffness in new doors during the first few weeks, this is perfectly normal and usually resolves itself.

We hope this guide has taken some of the mystery out of the installation process. Whether you're planning to replace a single window or transform your home with new doors and a conservatory, understanding what's involved helps you feel confident and in control. If you're ready to take the next step, or simply want to chat through your options, the MW Installations team is always happy to help homeowners across Merseyside, Warrington, Wigan, Cheshire and Greater Manchester.
